Despite being one of the strongest and most secure operating systems, Mac is not immune to attacks by malicious software. Best Hosted Endpoint Protection and Security SoftwareLatest version. ClamXav 2.7 is the last free edition of the storied Mac antivirus app, but it fails to impress with an unintuitive interface and poor independent lab scores. It has been more than 19 years since Mac OS X was released and there has been much anticipation and speculation about how the forthcoming. On Jit was announced at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference that macOS 11, also known as Big Sur, will be released this year. ClamXAV is Ready for macOS 11.A source list at left included the whole computer, my files, and my user folder, plus Documents, Desktop, and Downloads. ClamXav is a graphic user interface for OS X based on Clam, a popular and powerful open-source and cross-platform antivirus.Like ProtectWorks and Malwarebytes for Mac Premium, ClamXAV is all about the scans. ClamXav has a great user interface that. There's no per-year subscription—the price is just $29.95, once. McAfee is unusual in that a $59.99 per year subscription lets you install antivirus on every device in your household. For home users, ClamXAV has a very different (and very generous) pricing scheme. Most have a discount price for three licenses, or some other multiple. Pricing and OS SupportBitdefender, Webroot SecureAnywhere Antivirus (for Mac), and Malwarebytes are among the Mac antivirus products that cost $39.99 per year for a single license it's a common price point. A toolbar across the top lets you check for updates, view scan and update logs, and set preferences. However, if for some reason you must run an older version, your pool of choices shrinks. How about zero? Sophos Home (for Mac) and Avira both offer impressive antivirus protection at no cost.If you're fortunate enough to have a modern Macintosh, running the very latest macOS version, you can choose from any of the available antivirus tools. If price is an issue, this is an extremely cost-effective way to protect your Macs against malware.Of course, you can add antivirus protection to your Macs for even less cash.
Like Sophos and ESET, ClamXAV earned its chops with 98.4 percent detection. This lab also performs a separate test using Windows malware. Two of these labs also run tests on Mac antivirus tools, and one of them, AV-Test Institute, certifies the effectiveness of ClamXAV's protection.Bitdefender, Intego Mac Internet Security X9, Kaspersky, and Norton all managed 100 percent detection in this test, but utter perfection isn't a requirement for certification. Malware Protection CertificationI follow regular reports from five independent antivirus testing labs regarding the tested efficacy of Windows antivirus utilities. Like ESET and ProtectWorks AntiVirus (for Mac), it supports all macOS versions back to Snow Leopard (10.6). Real-Time and Scheduled ScanningYou might think that ClamXAV doesn't offer real-time protection against new malware attacks, because the real-time protection component is subtle. That's decent, but Bitdefender, ESET, Intego, and Symantec Norton Security Deluxe (for Mac) scored at the very top. In a test using PUAs, ClamXAV managed 90 percent detection. You can set ClamXAV to scan every day, every weekday, every weekend day, or on a specific day of the week. The schedule window suggested dragging the desired item into the schedule box, but I found it easier to just click the button and add a folder. That's probably all you need, though it's possible to extend protection to other folders by digging into the program's Preferences dialog. Also in preferences, you can schedule a regular scan for the whole computer or for any device or folder. Clamxav Full Computer ScanHands On With ClamXAVSome antivirus utilities give you the choice of a full computer scan or a quick scan that just looks for active malware and blatant malware traces. It's quite an elaborate system. You can schedule scans and updates daily, weekly, or at an interval you choose, or set it to act on trigger events like detection of a threat. By default, it schedules a quick scan for every user logon and signature update. I was surprised to find this activity not scheduled by default. If you're really into scan scheduling, you might prefer ESET Cyber Security (for Mac) ($39.99/Year at ESET). Create mac os emulator in vmnwareHowever, when I mounted a USB drive containing the samples I use for Windows antivirus testing, it flagged 43 percent of them as malware, identifying most by name. A repeat scan finished almost immediately apparently ClamXAV skips files that it already verified as safe.As noted, ClamXAV doesn't promise to detect and quarantine malware that's designed to infect Windows computers. A scan of the Apple MacBook Air 13-Inch that I used for testing took 42 minutes, just a few minutes more than the current average, and turned up a few suspicious HTML pages in the browser's cache. That's because an update to Safari this spring broke its website-filtering feature. You can see in the chart that McAfee also lacks antiphishing scores, at present. Top scores in my antiphishing test go to Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac and Kaspersky. Phishing attacks work by tricking the user, regardless of the operating system or browser used.Like Intego, Malwarebytes, and ProtectWorks, ClamXAV doesn't attempt this useful layer of protection. This component, typically a browser extension, checks the URLs you visit and blocks access to those that are known to host malware, as well as phishing sites, fraudulent websites that try to steal your login credentials. You can also configure it to quarantine found malware automatically. The majority of the Mac antivirus products I've reviewed include a web protection component. Sophos and Trend Micro let parents filter objectionable content from their children's devices, while Kaspersky offers a full-scale parental control component.Piling on features just isn't in ClamXAV's character. Norton, Kaspersky Internet Security for Mac, and Intego, in particular, offer firewall protection and other security components beyond the basics of malware protection. You'll find Windows antivirus tools that include encryption, password management, spam filtering, firewall protection, parental control, and more. Some of the Mac security tools I've reviewed are in fact security suites. What's Not HereCompetition is fierce among Windows antivirus utilities, and many of them attempt to stand out from the pack by adding security features typically reserved for a full security suite. These two are our Editors' Choice winners in the Mac antivirus arena. Kaspersky Internet Security for Mac also aces both lab tests, and its features go well beyond those of a simple antivirus. Where ClamXAV earned one lab certification, Bitdefender earned two, with top scores. AV-Test certifies its capabilities, and it's easy to use, but it doesn't go beyond basic malware protection.Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac gives you basic malware protection, but it also keeps your browser away from malicious or fraudulent websites. Basic Protection, Excellent PriceYour $29.95 one-time purchase of ClamXAV (for Mac) lets you install protection on all the Macs in your household, without the yearly subscription update required by every other commercial Mac antivirus I've seen.
